The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

On April 12th, I took my professional engineering exam.

The Good: I got my results back.

The Bad: I failed.

The Ugly: I'm torn.  I'm not upset (I'm actually surprised I didn't cry); what's do is done I keep telling myself.  I just feel utterly defeated. I studied close to three months for the exam and devoted myself entirely.  For what?

In the past several months I've come a lot farther than I was.  I've learned items that will benefit my current position as well as that will be useful when I take the test again, but really that's just what I'm telling myself to cushion the blow. Although my mind is also thinking, great now I'll spend half a year studying for this damn test.  In the end I know it's beneficial, professionally, personally and financially, but getting to the light at the end of the tunnel, which has now doubled in length, is discouraging.

The test is offered every April and October.  My review course I took offers a guarantee, as long as I take the test this Fall or April 2014, I can retake the course for free.  Knowing I studied almost three months in the winter and didn't pass, there's no way in hell I plan on taking the test in the fall.  So, I'll give myself a break and ramp up again next January.

  2. My older sister took the exam and failed it the first time as well. And currently I'm studying for the Bar Exam. These tests are tough, and I know first hand what that tunnel of yours feel like. Chin up. The light is either sun and we'll survive or its a train and we'll get the enjoy the sweet, sweet release of death. I'm obviously joking... kinda.

  4. Sorry to hear you didn't pass the exam. I remember how stressed I was when I needed to take my subject area exam for my teaching certificate. The good news is that pull be able to take it again and that our review course will be free! I don blame you for wanting to wait until the spring though! I wouldn't want to spend my summer studying either! :)

  5. I'm a fellow PE (CivE) and fashion fan so I've loved reading your blog. I just want to let you know I totally understand what you're going through. I did not pass the PE my first time either. It took a few times, but finally things fell into place and I passed! All your hard work will be worth it in the end. I just want you to know that you are not alone. Honestly, the majority of people I know taking the current PE have not been passing on the first try (which made me feel better!). I think taking a break til next winter is a great idea and I wish you the best of luck!
