Bears Down (+deals)

Hi there. I hope you had a nice weekend! Ours was great.  We had friends in from out of town and kept busy all weekend (I have pics to share later with some details).  The finale to our weekend was the Bears vs Houston Texans game last night.

Thank you to all of those currently serving
our country and who have served our country.
Remember the Texas Wedding from this summer? The newlyweds came up to Chicago this weekend for a visit and timed the visit for the Chicago/Houston game.  They stayed with another couple but invited us with to the Bears Game. When they said they planning on spending up to $150 each per ticket, we declined the offer, not wanting to spend that much money after this years vacations.

Luckily for us, a friend of my father in law had a pair of season tickets he wasn't going to use because of the night game (he lives three hours from Chicago), so he sold them to us for face value at $80 each.  Well, technically to my in-laws because they graciously offered to buy them for us (and who are we to decline such an offer?).

We knew the weather forecast was dicey, but then again, we realized we hadn't been to a game since 2006 when I bought Ben Bears vs Packers tickets for Christmas and that was the coldest game Brett Farve said he's ever played in (since the Bears got Jay Cutler as QB, ticket prices have sky rocketed).  We geared up with our ponchos, my Wellies, and plenty of layers to survive the game.  Unfortunately, the Bears (and Jay Cutler) did not.  We lost 13 to 6 and Jay Cutler failed to return to the field after halftime. ESPN-Chicago had stated he had a concussion.

The one thing we have going for us, is that the games we do attend, always seem to be memorable.

State String Art

Remember the Texas Wedding over Fourth of July weekend?

I just realized I never posted about my gifts!  I gave my go-to Wedding Date Cash and Invite Ornament, but I also went to give them something special.  I looked through my DIY Gift Ideas on Pinterest and came across this.

I knew it was perfect for this couple.

State String Art

Supplies:
  • 12" x12" wood (I bought "quality" wood from Menards at $16 for a 12"x48"; I had them cut it into 4- 12"x12" pieces for me -for free!-; you could always paint your word too)
  • Nails
  • String
  • Map
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Tape
  • PATIENCE!

Directions:
  • Cut map out and tape on center of board
  • Start hammering in nails around board. I spaced my out ~1/4" from one another
  • Go all the way around (don't nail on the map!)
  • Around your city of interest; sketch out a heart
  • Place nails and hammer in to create heart
  • Tie string around a nail on the state outline; hold tight, bring into one of the nails on the heart, wrap around, and take out to wrap around the next state outline nail.
  • Repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat.
  • Forever....or  until you've strung string around the entire state outline and are back where you started (except with a head cramp and having yelled several choice curse words)
  • Finish and tie off the string

Tape down map

Nail in outline

Complete! The above is with string wrapped around each state outline once.
I ended up deciding my heart wasn't really "defined" so I got a new piece of string
and wrapped a few more times on the bottom right of the heart!

Viola!

Texas, Part II

Saturday, July 7th:

The big day! We woke up fairly bright and early to start prepping the yard for the ceremony and reception.

How cute is this wreath the bride's MIL made?

The bride coordinates events as part of her career, so she had a great vision for her wedding. Since the couple’s yard is huge, one half was set up for the ceremony and the other for the reception. It was one of the most adorable back-yard weddings I’ve ever seen, in person and even compared to the internet/magazines.
I did the tulle bows :O)
Their alter was handmade and beautiful

The balloons were a bit of a challenge to work with. We first picked up 150 balloons from Kroger and I volunteered to sit in the back of a pickup holding the balloons with another friend. Even though it was less than a mile from the store to the house, we had several balloon casualties because of the heat, which was kind of scary. But this...

 turned into this...

Our dresses were from Old Navy. We’re originally purchased a smocked tube top dress from Victoria’s Secret to wear as our bridesmaid dresses, but the colors in person weren’t what the bride was looking for, so she ended up ordered a dozen of these red bandana dresses in a variety of sizes. I literally didn’t try on my dress until about an hour before the ceremony, but luckily it was a pretty basic fit that worked well with any body type.

We all wore boots! Those of us (3) who are married got them as part of our wedding gifts!

About three hours before the ceremony (which was at 8pm), the skies started to get overcast and then the rain fell. With no backup plan, the bride was surprisingly in good spirits. As I told her, my mom always says that rain on a special day is considered a Hawaiian blessing. Lucky for us, the rain stopped about an hour before the ceremony. The only downfall was that the bride had rented a mechanical bull for the reception and the vendor called to cancel, saying they couldn’t set up outside in such wet conditions.

That was okay though, there was still a Snowcone truck and a bouncy slide to entertain. So much fun!

(I should note that the earlier days in the trip I wore my hair wavy.  For the wedding it was blowdried and curled; with the heat and humidty, it pretty much ended up looking like it would have it we'd saved the time curling and just put mouse in it!)

More pics from the night:

Bride and Groom
(She changed after getting cake frosting on her dress)

I wish the bride would have been looking!

Around 11pm, Party Bus #2 of the weekend came to pick us up for bartime. We were dropped off at Rebel’s Honky Tonk, which I can only describe as the most amazing country bar ever. Patio? Check. Mechanical Bull? Check. Dance floor? Check. We had a blast learning how to line dance and a few of us rode the mechanical bull. It’s challenging enough, let alone in a dress, but I was voted to be one of the best from our crew. It was so much fun!

We were having such a blast that we stayed there until bar close and then got back to the house around 3:15am, which was perfect considering my friend and I had a 4am pickup scheduled for our 6am flight. The small group that was left just chatted (and also ate some leftover dinner) until our taxi came. I was surprised how well the whole early pickup went over. The worst part of the morning was the 30 minutes we had to kill between checking in and waiting for our flight to board. We were pretty much pinching each other to stay awake.

Thankfully, this flight had no issues. As soon as I was seated and buckled up, I put on my eyemask and passed out. We got back to Chicago around 8:30am and by 9:45am I was already tucked in bed at home. Sunday was a bit of a struggle, as I kept dozing off, but all in all, it was definitely worth the savings to take the 6am flight home. I’m glad it worked out so well!

Texas was such a blast that we’ve talked about making it a Fourth of July tradition. We’ll have to see what the future holds!

Texas - Part I Post

Texas Part I

Y’all want to hear about my trip to Texas?!

I’d never been before, besides a layover or two in Houston, but that doesn’t count.  I posted a few times in the planning phase of the trip that I went down for a wedding I stood up in.  Prior to the trip, Ben and I debated about him coming because flights were $400+, he’d have to either take vacation time or pay $400 to be there for less than 48 hours, the bride’s fiancĂ© didn’t make it to our wedding, etc.  The final decision for Ben not to come was when the husband of the other couple we were going to travel with was asked to be in a different wedding. This officially made it a girls trip.
(Also, I should note that some of these pics were taken by my friend. Remember how I couldn't find my camera battery charger?  Last minute I couldn't find one at Target or Best Buy, so I ended up ordering one off Amazon and having it shipped to the bride's house.  Thus, easrly in the week I didn't have a camera)

Tuesday, July 3rd
After leaving work an hour early, I met one of my friends at the Blue Line El stop to take the train to O’Hare.  We got there, got checked, blah blah blah.  A third friend was flying into O’Hare from the Quad Cities and then the three of us had seats together on our United O’Hare to Houston flight.  Our friend had about 15 minutes to get from Concourse F to Concourse C and was close to dripping sweat by the time she arrived. She arrived just in time for us to learn that our flight was pushed back from two hours.

Bummer, but it happens, right?  We called the bride to break the bad news and then headed to Chili’s for much needed drinks and some food.

We get back around boarding time and our flight is pushed back another 20 minutes and then another 5 minutes since we’re waiting for a new plane to arrive from Minneapolis as the first plane had “mechanical issues”.  Finally, around 9pm we board the plane.  Once settled, the doors are locked, we watch the safety video etc, the caption comes on to say that the backup generator for engine #2 is down.  In order for maintenance to fix it, the plane needs to be depowered and we need to get off.

This is seriously a drag, right?  So, we get off and as we get back to the waiting area, the clerk starts collecting boarding passes and an announcement that the flight is cancelled comes on.  We run (with our suitcases and totes) to Customer Service.  While in line, we also call customer service.  We’re in the middle of rebooking a noon flight for the following day when we hear the announcement: “Flight to Houston boarding in 15 minutes”.  Ugh!  So, we departed at 10:30 instead of 6:00; meaning we missed the Josh Abbott concert we were supposed to be going to; but thankfully we made all there in once piece.

The matching boots n bags wasn't intentional,
but I did get a few comments about what a coordinated travel I was

The night day I got an email from United apologizing for the inconvenience and offering my choice of 3,000 rewards miles or $75 credit.  I’m thinking I’m going to take the $75 credit because if we combined my miles and Ben’s miles from our Europe trip, we have enough for one free ticket and then we could get $75 off our second ticket, but I still have three weeks to decide.

We arrived around 1am and were greeted at the airport by the bride and fiancĂ©.  We got fast food for a snack, Whattaburger (delicious grilled cheese), before heading to their house.

Wednesday, July 4th:
Due to our late arrival we ended up sleeping in until 11am, whoops!
The bride works for one of the park districts in the area (The Woodlands, about 30 minutes north of Houston); so we went to one of the community pools for a while before getting lunch at Black Walnut Cafe.  This place was amazing, like an upscale Panera.  You order and pay at the counter, but the food is all made fresh and way bigger and better than Panera.
We showered and hung out before going to Market Street Area in the Woodlands for dinner before fireworks.  We ended up at Barry Hill, which is another order at the counter type place, except that it’s Mexican food.  It was delicious!!  The margaritas were strong, but between those, the chips, salsa and dill ranch sauce, we had plenty to snack on before our food came, which took a while.  So long in fact that as we were eating we could hear the fireworks starting at TheWaterway.  We left dinner and got to a viewing spot pretty much just as the grand finale started.  Oh well, that’s the best part of the show anyways!

Thursday, July 5th:

Thursday morning we went back to the Woodlands to go kayaking.  We took out four boats and had a blast.  We kayaked on a man-made lake that was surrounded by some gorgeous houses.

For lunch we decided we wanted some good ole southern BBQ so we went to Spring Creek, which was a cafeteria style set up.  You choose your meet and then helped yourself to sides.  The brisket was delicious!
The rest of the afternoon we hung out and then got ready for the bachelorette.  We had a room at the new Hyatt at Market Street and it was gorgeous!

The hotel has a bar and pool on the second floor, which is nice, but the way the building is, the pool didn’t seem like it’d get much sun.
For dinner we talked over to Waterway.  We didn’t have reservations or much of a plan, so we ended up having dinner at Stir Crazy.  The strawberry mojitos there were delicious.  From there we went to Crush Club, which is a rooftop bar.  Thursday night was Salsa Night, so there was a couple who owned a dance studio giving lessons. A few of us tried it out, but didn’t last long, although it was fun!

(Of course the bride's little niece didn't go out with us)
From there we stopped at the fountain fixture to take some pictures.  The bride told us that the fountain cost something crazy like $8 million.  It had lights and the heights of the water and lights were choreographed to music.  It reminded me a lot of Magic Fountain in Barcelona (which is my next Europe trip city to blog about).

The next bar we hit up was Goose's Acres, which was huge.  It’s an Irish bar and was supposedly moved from Ireland to the Woodlands.  It was bingo night, so we had fun attempting to play, until it got to be too confusing with having had drinks :O)  After Goose’s, we went to our last bar of the night, which was also the most fun (probably because it was the end of the night), Baker’s Street.  There we found the significant others of two of the bachelorette party as well as the bride’s stepdad.  There was also a band, so we got in some quality dancing.

(Note: the bathrooms at Baker’s Street are hidden behind a faux bookcase.  Unless you know where it’s at, don’t wait until the last minute to go to the bathroom or you’re walking a fine line :O)

Friday, July 6th:
Needless to say, Friday morning was all sorts of struggles.  Myself and another friend got dropped off at the Hilton Garden Inn where some of our friends were staying and we pretty much laid lifelessly by the pool all day, until we walked over to Chick-fil-a for lunch.

Friday night was the rehearsal dinner, but it wasn’t your traditional rehearsal, in that we didn’t practice at all.  Instead, we had pizza and beer and mingled among friends and family until our party bus came to pick us up for the Astros vs. Brewers game.  The Astros got killed, but the game was still fun. All of the bridesmaids were given jerseys to wear for the game!
Enjoying an Astros crazy straw

Back from TX (+deals)

Howdy y’all!  I’m back from Texas.  I had a blast and I’ll tell you all about it later, but right now I’m still trying to recover, especially from yesterday :O)

If you recall, my friend and I booked a 6:00am flight to save $70 as compared to flying out at 10:30am.  The wedding was Saturday night and we did drink, but nothing got extremely rowdy, just the perfect amount.  We ended up staying awake post-reception and post-reception bars to have our cab pick us up at 4am for the airport.  I actually still felt pretty awake when the cab got us.  The worst part of the day was the 30 or so minutes after we checked in for our flight and while we were waiting to board.  Once on the plane, I put on my eyemask and was out until we landed in Chicago.

I took the El train back from O’Hare to our apartment to find Ben still in bed (it was 9:30am), so I joined him and we both slept until 1:30!  We grabbed some lunch, Italian beef sandwiches and enjoyed the gorgeous weather on the deck.

I ended up watching TV in the bedroom because Ben was brewing, which stinks up the living room and fell asleep again!  Whoops. Last night we watched the new 21 Jump Street last night and I surprisingly stayed awake for the whole thing until we went to bed around 9:30. The movie was mindless, but it wasn’t half bad.

This week I have Friday off, which means I have to work 45 minutes longer than my usual shift.  I have groceries to shop for, a bag and suitcase to unpack, and tons of laundry to do.  Today/tonight is going to be rough to get through, but I’ll make it.
