State String Art

Remember the Texas Wedding over Fourth of July weekend?

I just realized I never posted about my gifts!  I gave my go-to Wedding Date Cash and Invite Ornament, but I also went to give them something special.  I looked through my DIY Gift Ideas on Pinterest and came across this.

I knew it was perfect for this couple.

State String Art

Supplies:
  • 12" x12" wood (I bought "quality" wood from Menards at $16 for a 12"x48"; I had them cut it into 4- 12"x12" pieces for me -for free!-; you could always paint your word too)
  • Nails
  • String
  • Map
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Tape
  • PATIENCE!

Directions:
  • Cut map out and tape on center of board
  • Start hammering in nails around board. I spaced my out ~1/4" from one another
  • Go all the way around (don't nail on the map!)
  • Around your city of interest; sketch out a heart
  • Place nails and hammer in to create heart
  • Tie string around a nail on the state outline; hold tight, bring into one of the nails on the heart, wrap around, and take out to wrap around the next state outline nail.
  • Repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat.
  • Forever....or  until you've strung string around the entire state outline and are back where you started (except with a head cramp and having yelled several choice curse words)
  • Finish and tie off the string

Tape down map

Nail in outline

Complete! The above is with string wrapped around each state outline once.
I ended up deciding my heart wasn't really "defined" so I got a new piece of string
and wrapped a few more times on the bottom right of the heart!

Viola!
