Summer Sangria

Sangria is one of those drinks that just screams summer! isn't it?  It's refreshing, it's fruity, it's alcohol. In short, it's awesome.

My dad use tests out several sangria recipes every summer, sending Mr. Sister and I his favorites for use to make up.  Last June, one of the recipes he sent really stuck with me, of course with my own modifications.

Sangria
Ingredients:
  • Two bottles of cheap red dry wine (such as Cabernet savignon or Merlot)
  • 1 cup brandy (again, I use the cheap stuff)
  • 1 bottle sparkling apple cider*
  • 1 can lemonade*
  • 1 can Sprite*
  • 1/2 cup white sugar*
  • 1 orange
  • 1 granny smith apple
*The beauty (or maybe frustration?) of sangria is that every time you make a recipe there's going to be a variance.  All of the asterisked items could be considered optional.  You could sub a bottle of moscato for the sparkling apple (my family told me I would be on the floor after a glass if I did this:) or tonic water for Sprite. The sugar is optional depending on how sweet you want the concoction. Really, whatever  floats your boat.
 Directions:
(Note it's hardly worth putting in bullets because it's so easy)
  • Pour your liquids into a large container (note: I didn't use the Sprite here).  Chill and allow to sit and muddle (ideally 24 hours, minimum one hour).
  •  Once muddled, taste the mixture.  At this point add in additional liquids (in my case, a case of Sprite) as well as sugar, if desired.  Be sure to stir in the sugar.
  •  Cut up your fruit in small chunks and add into liquid
  • Enjoy chilled!

  1. looks good. Sprite is pretty much my go to addition to any drink that I do not add sparkling wine to.
