V-day

Hello there Valentines! Thought I forgot about'cha, did ya?  It's been a busy week with work and gathering documents for our mortgage lender...but the big news is, we have a closing date and time!  Two weeks from today, this will officially be ours (and two weeks and a day from now we'll be busting our booties to get all of this trim painting white; is that a sin?)
Given the major purchase, we agreed to forgo gifts and dinner this year.  This weekend we'll be headed up to Summit County to stay at our family friend's condo (the owner happens to be our realtor's daughter) and spend the weekend snowboarding prior to all of this homeowner business.

Denver Restaurant Week is Feb 22-28; so we agreed we'll do a nice meal out (at a discounted price) as a Valentines/Home celebration. Yesterday Ben sent an email along the lines of "just checking, we're not doing gifts or cards tomorrow, right? I'll buy you some flowers once we're in the house". I agreed and low and behold this morning I woke up to this, jerk (I mean that in the most loving way).
Although...that really does say a lot! Happy Valentine's Day!

Whoops.

It's here. It's been here a week now. Whoops. This is certainly not how I planned to start off the blog in the new year, but ya know, the holidays are busy, especially when you travel!

A recap of our holidays:

We were all set to drive back to Illinois early Christmas Eve morning.  Ben had suggested driving back after work on 12/23 and I'd shot the idea down for fear of driving over night and us staying awake (last summer Ben's family drove out to CO and his mom fell briefly fell asleep at the wheel. Thankfully the rumble strips her up immediately, but because of that we instated the rule that someone needs to always be awake with the driver). Monday morning, 12/23, I got to work anxious to get the day over. After checking the forecast and road conditions, I emailed Ben and said "what the hell? we might as well drive after I get off to have the extra time with family" and we did just that.

We arrived home at 4am MT/5am CT and immediately hopped in bed for a few hours.  By 10:30 we were up and at 'em. We even made it to 10pm Christmas Eve Mass!

This year's Christmas was a strange one.  With our nephew being here, my SIL decided they wanted his first Christmas to be in their own home in Chicago.  My brother and his wife decided that their dog is on her last leg (so sad!) and it was best not to travel with her but they hated the thought of leaving her behind, thus we both missed siblings at Christmas. None the less, it was so nice to be home with our parents and Mr. Sister. Home is always home.

Family Tradition: Ticket to Ride and wine :)
Thursday I got my first EVER spray tan. I went to a place called Flesh Tones as recommended by my hair stylist/wedding make up artist, Glam 2 Go. A person did airbrush spray and it was only $15! I was pretty nervous that first night, but overall happy with the results!
Friday Ben and I hopped in the car for our next roadtrip, a five hour drive to Indianapolis for MT's wedding! We were supposed to have arrived with an hour to spare before rehearsal, but do to the worst back up I've ever seen, thanks to a overturned jello and pudding semi load (REALLY! I could not make up a worse excuse!), we barely caught the end of rehearsal.

Wedding day was perfect.  MT had arranged for hair and makeup (and food) in the private loft area of an adorable salon called A'Do.  From there we went to a beautiful Catholic church for pictures and the ceremony.  Who would have thought that the last Saturday in December in the Midwest would end up being 50 degrees?!

I was pretty proud of my makeup! I saved $50 and did it myself :)
The party bus and reception were a blast. One of my best friends, MJ and her husband were there. I hadn't seen her in months so it was great to catch up and hang out.
I die. Love the look on MT's face

Sunday morning, dead tired, we drove back to the QC to watch the Bears lose. My inlaws had driven to Chicago on Christmas day and taken our gifts for SIL with, returning with their gifts for us; so Sunday night we FaceTimed and opened another round of gifts.
10 months old; isn't he adorable?!
...because we were up early on Monday to get on the road back to Denver!
The loves of my life
We got home around 5pm and had our last Christmas tradition: Ben and I's exchanging of gifts. I love this quite wrap up (or should I say unwrapping? ha!) of the holidays and the time between the two of us after the chaos of family.

I hope you had a great holiday season!

To You and Yours

Front of our card

Back of our card
For the past three years I've been doing double sided holiday cards with our year in review. It's a fun way to remember the past year and a great way to tell our friends and family that we don't get to see as much as we would like to, what we've been up to.

I'm not sure how the map idea came to mind; but it turned out just as I'd envisioned!

Right now we're somewhere in the middle of our twelve hour road trip back to our hometown. I hope you're snuggled warm and safe with your loved ones. Merry Christmas!

Holiday Cheer

I'm still pinching myself that Christmas is next week. With the move, our traditions and routine of the holidays aren't quite the same. I'm not sure I'd realize it was holiday season if I hadn't insisted we get a tree.

You would think for sure that in Denver's surrounding area there would be plenty of spot to cut down your own tree...but after spending some time on google it seemed like our only option was to get a license to cut from a forest.  My sister has joked that since moving to CO my style as become more lumberjack (see below), but I'm not quite there there!
J Crew Factory Vest (similar) // Lands End flannel (similar)

Instead, we opted for a tree lot conveniently located at Little Man Ice Cream.  Ice cream and a Christmas tree? I was in Heaven.
Oscar got his first taste of LM and LOVED it! He may even be a bigger fan than his momma.

We're adapting more and more into our new life. Oscar loves having Ben home with him.  Ben likes working from home, but I can also tell it's sometimes a struggle not to be in a typical work environment. But it has it's perks; for him: being able to wear sweat pants, make lunch or go for a lunch run; and for me: coming home to a clean apartment (included mopped floors) and clean laundry (this guy's a keeper!).

Sometimes I feel like I'm putting too much pressure on me/us to "get going" making friends, volunteering and to build up our connections here. Then I take a deep breath and remind myself, we've been here not even two months. We'll enjoy the holidays and then I'll try to put more effort into those goals in the new year.

We just need to get through the holidays, right Osc? It looks like he's already tired of them.
After all, it IS the most wonderful time of the year.

Wants and Wishes

Just when I feel like we're starting to feel settled it, the holidays are upon us and life feels chaotic again.  We decided it was too soon to go back for Thanksgiving, but we'll be headed back to the good ole' Midwest for about a week at Christmas, not only to see family and friends, but also for MT's wedding. I can't wait!

Tis the season to spoil others and let yourself be spoiled. Here are some of the items on my list this year. As usual, I started off with the "I don't really need anything" thoughts, but then it turns out, once I got looking, there is a whole lot I want!
I'm obsessed with the gold dots and love all things that can be personalized!

Fairisle sweaters seem to be all over this year and I'm lusting for one. I love the color combo on this.

Something both Ben and I will enjoy and reap the benefits of.

I've always liked vests, but since moving here, I've become a vest junkie! An ivory vest seems like a versatile addition. In order to save some money, like with my Uggs and North Face jackets, I size down to girls.

I have an obession for navy/white stripes (last count I think I owned 5+ tops in this combo; yipes!); add some jewels and I'm sold!

If you recall, we have an ornament from every trip Ben and I have been on together. It only seems fitting to now add this to the collection.

Don't make fun! I recently made italian beef and was heart broken (after visiting three different grocers) to realize you can't find good giardiniera here!)

If you feel like sending something my way, email me and I'll share my address ;)
What's on your list?

Weekend Recap: Family Fun

As planned, Friday night we took it easy on the couch and started our new habit of Breaking Bad. Saturday morning we woke up and went for a quick run (I've been terrible and have only been going about twice a week. Once I'm out, I forget how good it feels to be moving, especially now with the feeling of fall in the air). I hurried home and made our favorite breakfast sausage casserole, this time subbing in turkey sausage and it was still delish.
After breakfast, coffee and showers, we hopped in the car and headed to the suburbs to meet Ben's family in Boilingbrook (which may sound familiar to you because of Drew Peterson, the only reason I've heard of it).

We weren't there to track down Drew, rather to visit the pumpkin patch at Johansen Farms! I've been begging Ben a few years now for us to go to a pumpkin patch or apple orchard in the fall and I've never gotten a great response, so when my SIL sent an email that she wanted to take our nephew, it was the perfect opportunity to get him to tag along!
Although, to be honest, both Ben and I were really disappointed in this "patch" because it was nothing of the sort. More like a tent and boxes full of pre-picked pumpkins; not the leafy green vines and fields we'd envisioned.

Whomp, whomp!

After the initial disappointment, we still had a blast. Pumpkins are sold $0.40/lb. My SIL picked out a whomping 65 pounder, which is much bigger than our nephew!
Of course, having driven a hour to get to the pumpkin "patch", I refused to go home empty handed, so we found a nice twenty pound pumpkin, which looked like a baby compared to the big ones!
They also sold a variety of other fall items like mums, gourds, mini-pumpkins, apple cider donuts and miscellaneous Halloween decor.
I think the main attraction of the farm is just that, the farm animals.  Johansen has a children's farm that includes animals and attractions with a paid admission fee.  And, the majority of the people there had kids, so thankfully we'd gone with Ben's family rather than I dragging him out there just the two of us and looking like odd balls!

They were so many cute animals penned in and eagerly awaiting snacks from little hands full of corn.

There was the cutest exhibit full of baby chicks, dozens of them, that you were allowed to pick up and hold.
However, they are fast little boogers! I tried to pick on up and kept getting nervous that it would run away. I finally got one, but just for a brief second before it started to peck at my hands and I dropped it (don't worry, it was a couple inches above the pen and ran away once it hit the ground). Ben captured it on film.

I love dogs, but maybe farm/petting zoo animals just aren't my thing?

I have a distinct member from when I was young and at a petting zoo. My dad had bought me two little dixie cups full of feed for the goats.  Being as I wanted them to eat out of my hand, I tied my jacket around my waist, put one of the cups in the pocket and then I had my hands to hold the other cup and my second hand to feed the animals. You know where this is going right?
Sure enough, several goats starting coming up to me, but not to eat from my hand; they were after the cup in my coat pocket! I was so scared! Ever since I have not been a fan of petting zoos, can you blame me? I was swarmed!
Is it mean to say that I prefer goats behind gates?  I mean, this was a pretty cool set up with a bridge they could climb to go inside.
My SIL loves llamas. These guys are just too funny looking. It's kind of like a bulldog, how can you not see him and smile?
I think our nephew must already be a fan of them as well! He was intrigued with all of the animals.

In addition to animals, there are several child-based activities, like hayrides (which we skipped), bounce houses, and inflated slides.
The only activity we partook in was the Corn Maze. There weren't many opportunities to take the wrong turn, until the end. But I guess if you're under the age of 10, it could be kind of cool?

The animals were definitely more intriguing than the activities. Especially the baby animals, like this cow and goat.

We had a lot of fun, until we decided that everyone was getting a little sleepy and it was time to go.
From there, we were a skip away from Two Brother's Brewing Taphouse. This was how I'd convinced Ben to come to the pumpkin patch. The way to my man's heart is definitely through beer :)

While we had fun with Ben's family at the farm, we won't be headed back next year. I guess I'm still on the hunt for a spot for us to pick our own pumpkins!
